Reclaiming Your Present: A Sensory Awakening

Have you ever noticed how your senses – the way you see, hear, smell, taste, and touch – can transport you back in time?  A familiar scent, a certain sound, and suddenly you're reliving a past experience, complete with all the emotions that came with it.

For me, it was the smell of smoke. It didn't matter if it was a bonfire or a burnt piece of toast, my mind would instantly flash back to a Christmas morning when I was four years old. A rogue candle had set our tree ablaze, filling our home with fear and disappointment. As an adult, that same scent would trigger a strange emotional cocktail, leaving me feeling like a scared little girl trapped in a grown woman's body.

This year, I've decided to embark on a journey of sensory awareness. I want to understand how my past experiences are wired into my nervous system, influencing my reactions in the present moment. By paying attention to what's happening in my body and mind, I can separate the past from the present, creating space for more conscious and intentional responses.

The Power of Now

It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life, but taking a moment to tune into your senses can be incredibly grounding.  Notice the warmth of the sun on your skin, the taste of your morning coffee, the sound of birds chirping outside your window. These small moments of sensory awareness can help you connect with the present moment and cultivate a deeper appreciation for the simple joys of life.

As I continue this journey of self-discovery, I invite you to join me. Let's explore the fascinating connection between our senses and our emotions, and learn to live more fully in the present moment.
